Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent is the latest advance in foam blowing agent technology developed by Honeywell.

Solstice LBA has a global warming potential (GWP) of 1, which is more than two orders of magnitude (99.9%) lower than current HFCs used in this industry. It is a near drop-in replacement for other liquid foam blowing agents and is nonflammable, making it a cost-effective choice.

The energy efficiency benefits of Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent, combined with its low environmental impact and nonflammability, make it the right choice as a replacement for hydrocarbons, HFCs and HCFCs for use as a foam insulation blowing agent.

Comparative Properties of Solstice LBA

The table below shows Solstice LBA properties compared to HFC-245fa and other commonly used foam blowing agents. Solstice LBA exhibits certain key physical properties similar to HFC-245fa (boiling point, flammability) and also properties superior to cyclopentane.
Our new foam blowing agent’s GWP of 1 is 99.9% lower than currently utilized HFCs.

Lower Conversion Cost

Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent is a near drop-in replacement for liquid HFC blowing agents. It is liquid at room temperature and can be used in most existing foam equipment, regardless of current blowing agent used, with little or no modification.

Replacing existing foam blowing agents with Solstice LBA eliminates the need for large capital conversion costs. And our new foam blowing agent does not require costly hydrocarbon storage and handling or risk mitigation equipment.

The flammability characteristics and VOC mitigation required with other foam blowing agents (such as hydrocarbons) make them less desirable as replacements for existing blowing agents.

Keeping the Best of HFCs, Plus Low GWP

Honeywell’s fourth generation foam blowing agent was formulated to have a significantly lower global warming potential (GWP) and improved energy efficiency while retaining nonflammability and ease of conversion.

Honeywell Solstice LBA is a near drop-in replacement for liquid HCFC, HFC, hydrocarbons and other foam blowing agents. In addition, these properties continue to differentiate Honeywell foam blowing agents as the best choice for high performance rigid foam insulation applications and for those applications where a flammable foam blowing agent is unsafe, too costly to use, or fails to provide the desired foam performance.

Solstice LBA is VOC-exempt as determined by the U.S. EPA.

While Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent provides excellent insulation performance to polyurethane foam, it’s distinctly different from hydrocarbon foam blowing agents in flammability characterization.

Solstice LBA shipment, storage, handling and processing do not require flammability risk mitigation. Flammable foam blowing agents, such as cyclopentane, require flammability risk mitigation, which can add significant capital costs.

Solstice LBA is nonflammable by ASTM E-681 test method.
